The government is this morning expected to announce a new package of measures to curb the theft of mobiles.
Whitehall has drawn up a charter to reduce the number of mobile phone robberies. It is allocating £1.35m of government funding to create a centre dedicated to keeping phones with their rightful owners.
The Home Office will also launch a scheme to block all mobiles from being used within 48 hours of their theft being reported. It is spending on awareness-raising advertising in areas where phone thieves operate.
More on this story later.

This could have the reverse effect and increase mobile theft.
If the reason for the theft is to use the phone, rather than to sell it on for the value of the phone then the theives are going to have to replace the ones they steal more requently hence more thefts not less.
If you want to stop thefts by blocking the phones then it has to be immediate not sometime in the next two days.
