Mobile WiMax to choke out fixed?

From complementary to competitive

NEWS

Mobile WiMax may yet kill off its fixed counterpart, analysts believe.

A new report from Juniper Research is predicting the number of mobile WiMax subscribers will top 21 million by 2012 - rising from 1.7 million next year - boosted by fixed WiMax users swapping to the mobile variant.

According to the report, the two types of WiMax will eventually become intertwined and eventually compete with each other.

The report also suggests the comparative cheapness of deploying mobile WiMax base stations compared to cellular will give the technology a boost - taking equipment revenues to $2.53bn by 2012.

A separate report from Sky Light Research found that Alvarion is dominating the WiMax equipment market, with more than 80 per cent market share.
