These are some of the departure gates to the south end of the terminal.
T5 will be able to accommodate 30 million extra air passengers per year, making Heathrow the leading passenger hub in Europe.
Heathrow badly needs the new terminal as 70 million travellers currently pass through its doors each year, using an infrastructure originally designed for just 45 million.
The circular disks on the ceiling are designed to improve acoustics in what is a vast space.

A friend of mine has been testing this new system. It took a dozen bags over 2 hours to get to their destination and when, in another test a 130 bags were put into the system, only 15 turned up at the right destination.
Something to be proud of indeed!

Will the shiny new baggage carousel be the same as all others in that the usual idiots will blockade it by trundling up against it with their trolleys and the whole family in tow whilst those whose bags are already on the conveyor can't get near it?

Let's hope there is sufficient investment in the on-going maintenance and at a cost that doesn't drive the quality out. Otherwise things will not be 'World class' for very long. In my experience an all too familar story these days.
