This aerial view of the T5 development shows the scale of the project with the rest of the airport stretching away to the east.
The main terminal building - T5A - is visible, with the first satellite building (T5B) beyond. There will also be T5C, which will be operational from 2010.
The whole T5 site covers the same area as Hyde Park in London.
The entire airport is set for a complete makeover with a series of similar 'toast rack' terminals replacing the ageing terminals during next decade.
Nick Gaines said T5 is, in effect, "the unlocking key" to the redevelopment of the whole central terminal area.
He said: "It's a genuine mega-project by any measurement."

A friend of mine has been testing this new system. It took a dozen bags over 2 hours to get to their destination and when, in another test a 130 bags were put into the system, only 15 turned up at the right destination.
Something to be proud of indeed!

Will the shiny new baggage carousel be the same as all others in that the usual idiots will blockade it by trundling up against it with their trolleys and the whole family in tow whilst those whose bags are already on the conveyor can't get near it?

Let's hope there is sufficient investment in the on-going maintenance and at a cost that doesn't drive the quality out. Otherwise things will not be 'World class' for very long. In my experience an all too familar story these days.
