This is the spider-like catamaran Proteus, the first full sized wave adaptive modular vessel, designed to adapt to waves rather than fight them.
The vessel was on show as part of HP's New York product launches this week - the designers of the boat used HP hardware, and the boat is emblazoned with HP advertising.

This is certainly not the first full sized wave adaptive modular sea going vessel
We traveled on a regular ferry service from Brighton Marina to France and back over 20 years ago on a commercial catamaran service that used a system to “read” the waves and adjusted the feet to make the ride smooth
On one return journey we were advised that we were in a force eight gale but the systems compensated to such a degree we were able to drink our drinks’ without spillage – when we were about to enter Brighton marina, the captain advised us to sit down and strap in as he came off “legs” - his words not mine – we did as we were asked and a good job to as the roll was really quite scary
