Alice - armoured and automated

By Stephanie Olsen on 27 September 2007 09:00

Externally, the robot Alice has dozens of sensors and other technology, including two GPS units and about seven lidar devices, which detect lanes and objects on the road. A short-range lidar sensor picks up obstacles like potholes, and a Riegl sensor observes long-range lane lines.

Radars estimate the distance of a vehicle ahead. On the roof of the car, there's a pan tilt unit (PTU), which can home in and focus on parts of the road or objects. The pole includes a TV camera, radar and lidar.

Just being picky, but is it proper use of English to refer to "radars". Somehow it looks wrong. RADAR is an acronym for Radio Direction and Ranging, so surely it should be "radar arrays", or something similar.
