Play.com has begun listing brand new unlocked iPhones for sale on its website - both the original and 3G models - SIM-free, opening up Apple's smartphone for use on any UK mobile network.
Play.com says the phone will work on Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, 3 and O2 in the UK, and come with a full manufacturer warranty. A spokesperson for Play.com told silicon.com sister site CNET.co.uk the phone can be registered as normal on Apple's website, and "the standard Play.com returns policy would apply".
The phones themselves originate from within the EU, "due to EU legislation ensuring the sale of SIM-free mobile phones", and should work the same way as phones bought from O2, except users won't be able to use visual voicemail.
On offer are unlocked 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3Gs, for £549 and £599 respectively. Pay-monthly or pre-pay SIM cards will be compatible.
Apple declined to comment on the matter.

Hmm.
I've had one of these for a year.
The issue is (still), do we have to keep using hacked code to run our 'unnofficial' iphone, or will Apple bow to the inevitable and have a amnesty?

They also do the iPhone 2G for £199.99.
It has everything the 3G has except 3G and GPS for £350 less! Better battery life too.

This is an official phone.
I bought one in from Italy last year, SIM free and it works fine with no hacked code needed for updates, App Store etc etc
