Vodafone races to mobile speeds of 14.4Mbps

But just how much of that will you see?

NEWS

Vodafone 3G users could soon find themselves getting a speed boost.

The operator announced today that it has begun upgrading its HSDPA - a type of 3G - network to offer a theoretical maximum downlink of 14.4Mbps, which should see customers able to achieve speeds of between 1Mbps and 5Mbps.

Extra speed is always nice, but what I find more frustrating than a lack of truly high speeds is the lack of decent 3G geographical coverage. A week ago I was staying in a rural area, but only a short drive from a big town. All I could get from Vodafone was a painfully slow GPRS connection. Thanfully I also had a 3 dongle and although the 3 signal was weak I got a usable connection.
