T-Mobile's Sidekick data: All may not be lost

News in brief: Hope for users' disappeared info

NEWS

There may be some good news for Sidekick owners: users' data which was thought lost after a server failure at Microsoft subsidiary Danger - the company that makes the devices - may yet be retrieved.

Users of T-Mobile's Sidekick had been told the lost data - which included contacts, calendars and other information - may be gone for good after the server outage last week, but T-Mobile said last night "prospects of recovering some lost content may now be possible".

Ahhh, the Cloud. It's a wonderful idea - don't keep your data yourself, let someone else lose it for you.

What are the details? What system, or cloud computing framework, did they use? Did the servers use back-up? Did they use Google File System (or something similar). Why does it take so long to figure out if the data can be retrieved?

My favorite question, Why did they pick the name Danger, for on-line storage? I'm serious.
