Make haste with the analogue-digital switch, urges EC

News in brief: TV spectrum to make room for wireless broadband

NEWS

The European Commission has called for EU members to speed their switchover to digital television, and therefore in the process free up spectrum, which can then be used for broadband services.

Viviane Reding, information society and media commissioner for the EC, said she wants EU countries to have made the move by 2012.

The plans to reserve spectrum for wireless broadband were first announced by the Commission in 2007.

Why not offer some spectrum for good fresh ideas?

So far, the great increase in TV (& Radio) channels seems to have brought yet more junk of even lower quality than the old analogue channels: Too much being cheap imports from the USA.

Why not offer some broadcast space for good new material from people outside the present Media cliques?

For example, many talented amateurs now have access to tools and equipment which is far better than "professional" equipment of just a few years ago; but the only "amateur" video broadcast is of crazy, boring stunts... or perhaps of ghastly news events.

Why not dedicate at least one channel to good quality material from UK amateurs?

With a little encouragement, this might even revitalise the UK's "creative industries."
