In brief: EC seeks wider opinion on telecoms mega-merger

NEWS The EC has sought the reaction of rival telcos to the WorldCom/MCI merger. Among the companies being consulted are GTE and Sprint. The EC will question them on the conditions that could be imposed to prevent the merger from giving the two US companies a monopoly over the supply of Internet backbone services. A draft decision to ban the deal was submitted to EU experts on Friday.
