In brief: Microsoft sells Softimage to Avid

NEWS Avid - a manufacturer of video and film editing equipment - has acquired Microsoft subsidiary, Softimage. Industry watchers claim the deal, which sees the 3-D animation specialist go to Avid for $285m (£178m), is unusual because Microsoft is not known for selling off companies. Microsoft will still hold a small stake in Montreal-based Softimage, and claims it will work with Avid on joint initiatives in digital television, interactive content development and other visual media technologies.
