Police investigate online World Cup ticket fraud

NEWS A Web site that persuaded football fans to send money for World Cup tickets that never materialised is under investigation by the Manchester Police Commercial Fraud Squad. A spokeswoman for the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) said UUNet - the ISP that hosted the site - should in no way be held accountable for the losses. Referring to a recent case in Germany where a former Compuserve employee was held legally responsible for indecent material hosted by the service, she said: "We at ISPA were disgusted by the outcome of this case - it's completely impossible for an ISP to account for every service it hosts." UUNet immediately shut down the service - called patrickandfriends.co.uk - at the beginning of June when complaints from disgruntled users started to flood into Fraud Squad headquarters. DS Baldwin at the Fraud Squad said enquiries are ongoing and no one has received money or tickets yet.
