In brief: AT&T in further trouble over TCI

By Lisa Burroughes, 30 June 1998 14:17

NEWS AT&T has met with further resistance to its planned merger with TCI as consumer advocate Ralph Nader today submitted a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Nader claims the merger of two companies "with a history of anticompetitve actions" could lead to them bundling products and services and "binding the consumer to the monopolist". The deal announced last week is still subject to FCC approval, but if successful will combine AT&T's long distance wireless services with TCI's cable telecommunications. AT&T's share price has plummeted by 13 per cent since the announcement. The pair tried to reassure analysts in Wall Street on Friday that providing telephony to TCI's consumers can be cost-effective.
