NEWS Microsoft is preparing to fly into another legal storm - this time to defend the use of the Internet Explorer brand name. The software vendor will go to court today to prove its right to use the name for its Web browser. Dhiren Rana, a software developer from Illinois claims he coined the name in 1994 for a Web browser he had developed. But Microsoft has dismissed this claim, stating that Internet Explorer is a generic, descriptive term and is not eligible for trademark. However, the US Patent and Trademark Office has disagreed and Rana's application for trademark was published today, allowing Microsoft 30 days to object to the award.
