In brief: Cegetel joins ISP ranks

NEWS Cegetel, the French telecoms operator which is 26 per cent owned by BT, has confirmed it is to provide Internet services through a joint venture with AOL, Bertelsmann and Canal+. The alliance brings together telecoms players, the existing AOL-Bertelsmann partnership and the television expertise of Canal+. The Internet service will start with 285,000 subscribers, drawn from AOL France and CompuServe France. Under the terms of the deal, which first came to light at the start of the year, Cegetel will take a 36.7 per cent stake in the company, with Canal+ taking 18.3 per cent and AOL and Bertelsmann a combined 45 per cent stake. Besides BT, Cegetel investors include Compagnie Generale des Eaux, Mannesmann and SBC Communications.
