Nortel benefits as Lucent drops contract

NEWS Lucent has walked out on a $700m (£425m) contract. Sistemas Profesionales de Comunicacion (SPC), who originally asked Lucent to build a wireless CDMA network, have now opted for Nortel instead. A spokesman for Lucent explained to Silicon that following some 'intense' negotiations, "we had signed a letter of intent with SPC, when they then demanded some very serious terms and conditions". Lucent received notification from SPC yesterday that it was not to get the contract. "Negotiation was carried out in good faith for several weeks, but ultimately both sides were unable to agree about the terms and conditions SPC required. We're always eager to do business, but not at any cost," Lucent said.
