NEWS Telecommunications has become the fastest growing vertical market for software and IT services in Europe, according to an Input report. The report suggests that the primary reason for this is the continuing liberalisation of the European telecoms industry. Input argues that the main functions required by new entrants and former state-owned monopolies are customer-facing systems, adequate network management and the upgrading of analogue systems to digital so they can offer advanced mobile and Internet services. The report estimates that European telcos are spending an average of 4.4 per cent of their revenues on IT - more than 2.5 times the European industrial average.
