Firstplace manipulates meta tags

NEWS The worst nightmare of Web search agencies came true this week at Chicago's Internet World '98, when FirstPlace launched Web Position Gold. The software is the first to enable the manipulation of hidden meta tags in a Web page to boost a company's visibility on the Internet. But regulations are not yet in place to prevent companies from abusing the tags and inserting key words that are popular, but not relevant to their business. Amy Mendosa, marketing coordinator for FirstPlace's marketing agent, Response Direct, said: "We searched for the names of all top Fortune100 companies and found that only ten of them came out top of the search engines. This shows the need for a more strategic use of meta text." Web Position Gold takes users step-by-step through each of the leading search engines' methods. It shows users how to place meta tags strategically on their sites, so they are picked up by the engines of their choice. FirstPlace intends the meta tags to be used only to describe the company's business. But the software cannot prevent a designer from adding the names of rivals, celebrities or popular terms.
