By Julian Goldsmith, 20 July 1998 15:51

NEWS Telecoms equipment vendor Siemens has announced a £6.5m investment in a UK-based R&D subsidiary, creating 150 jobs. The subsidiary, Roke Manor Research, specialises in communications and sensor technologies. It will now also have its 22-acre site in Romsey extended with the addition of 4,000 square metres of laboratory space. The company is believed to be working on cellular systems and personal satellite communications. The investment is part of a £100m programme to build up Siemens' activities in the UK telecoms industry. It comes after the company sold its 40 per cent stake in GPT to GEC, so it can market telecommunications equipment directly under the names Siemens Telecom Networks and Siemens Newbridge Networks.
