BBC ousts Net chief

NEWS BBC Online is in the midst of a radical overhaul of both its management structure and the content of its sites. Head of the department, Edward Briffa, is "looking around for senior management jobs", according to a BBC spokeswoman. The Web site has been heavily criticised by many within the industry for too closely mirroring the Corporation's television service, and for spending licence payers' money on a service which only 10 per cent of them can receive. The BBC spokeswoman said: "We have a duty to the licence payer to be available on all platforms." She denied that the Corporation is in partnership with Microsoft over Web TV, saying: "We are testing the possibilities of interactive TV with Microsoft and other companies." The review of the service's management structure is internal and no deadline has been set for it to reach a conclusion. A BBC source claimed Briffa is "looking outside the Corporation for his next managerial post".
