NEWS Another potential telecoms mega-deal is in the offing this week as Bell Atlantic and GTE, a provider of local services across the US, are rumoured to be on the verge of announcing a merger. The deal, if successful, would propel the combined company into the number two position in the US in terms of revenue. AT&T would remain the largest telco in the US. GTE and Bell Atlantic - which last year bought fellow East Coast Bell operating company, Nynex, in a deal worth $25.6m - had been linked with a number of other telcos in recent months, including BT.
