NEWS Cisco Systems is to buy Summa Four, a manufacturer of programmable switches, for $116m in stock. The deal, is the latest in a long line of acquisitions by the giant networking company, and will help Cisco provide equipment for voice-over-IP solutions. It highlights the trend of datacoms suppliers such as Cisco moving to provide products for voice services, while traditional telecoms equipment vendors such as Lucent Technologies and Nortel attack the data networking market. Summa Four's switches are also used for voice mail, calling card, and voice-activated dialling services. The company's employees will become part of Cisco's Network-to-User Business Unit.
