NEWS Telewest Communications has returned a glowing interim report for the six-month period ending 30 June, showing an increase in business customers of 41 per cent. Telewest chief executive, David Van Valkenburg, said he is pleased with the results, which showed revenue up 24.5 per cent on the corresponding period last year. Van Valkenburg added that the company has also managed to reduce its churn rate - the number of TV and telephony customers who returned to their original providers because of dissatisfaction with Telewest's service. "There are encouraging signs that we have tackled the product-related causes of churn," he said. "Our efforts are now focused on bolstering the support systems." Robin Bosworth, a director at telecoms research house, Schema, said: "The recent consolidation of the industry has made a big difference. Cable companies have been able to develop more serious service offerings for business customers because of this. Also, in terms of profitability, they now have the infrastructure to handle local and trunk switching. They are placed more in the small and medium enterprise market place, which gives them a very large and lucrative customer base."
