Lycos snaps up WhoWhere?

By Tony Hallett, 11 August 1998 16:35

NEWS Internet directory service Lycos has agreed to buy WhoWhere? for $133m in stock. WhoWhere? is a Web-based company offering directory services, a free email service called MailCity and angelfire.com, an online community with over 1.3 million members. Angelfire.com was the Internet's fastest growing site for the first six months of 1998 according to figures from Media Metrix. Lycos said the acquisition - which comes on the back of the purchase of Tripod, another online community - means it will own three of the ten most popular sites on the Web. Lycos is trying to position itself as the premier portal site provider, allowing users to visit one destination to view home-generated content plus information aggregated from various third parties. Lycos said the acquisition will lend marketing muscle to WhoWhere?, which will remain based in Mountain View, California, operating as a Lycos business unit.
