Dell and BT get cosy

By Tony Hallett, 12 August 1998 17:12

NEWS Dell is to bundle BT Internet with all modem-equipped Dell Dimension PCs using Windows 98. Dell said it was attracted by the fast growing Internet service provider (ISP) arm of BT - which now boasts over 150,000 subscribers - while BT stands to profit from being a mouse-click away from customers who have bought a new Dell PC. The two companies have worked together in the past, on Internet and networking projects for schools and local education authorities. BT is also trying to hook novice Internet users by offering an 'ISP-less', pay-as-you-surf Internet access service in September, which will carry no monthly fee but be charged through phone bills. However, the service faces protests from the Internet Service Providers Association, and is being investigated by the telecoms regulator, Oftel.
