'World Wide Wait' comes back to haunt ISPs

NEWS The latest research from the US has revealed that the Internet is just as slow as many Web sceptics say it is. Research group NetRatings worked out that it takes an average of 15 seconds to download a Web page based on an typical viewer visiting around 1,200 pages in July - or an average of five hours per month, per year. However, according to one UK Internet service provider (ISP), the European situation is very different. A spokesman at ISP Community Internet said: "The European advantage is that the number of Internet users is much lower than in the US." His guess is that the average wait is much less for European surfers. He also said waiting time won't increase as the number of users grow. "Technology is improving in line with this trend. The amount of investment going into bandwidth from the likes of WorldCom will ease congestion and keep the wait to a minimum."
