NEWS Excite has signed a two year agreement with IDT to bring Internet telephony to its portal site. From October, consumers and small to medium sized businesses will be able to make international calls at a 70 to 90 per cent lower cost than with conventional carriers, according to Excite. The facility will be available by downloading IDT's software from Excite for free. Evan Rudowski, director of European operations for Excite, said: "Part of our goal is to provide a range of communication products to the user so Excite will be used as a hub for the Internet rather than just a search engine." Rudowski said Excite's service is not currently targeting large corporations. However, a spokeswoman for IDT said there are ways it can be installed for enterprise use. "It can either be downloaded onto a company network or they can use a phone jack and plug it into the company's PBX." The IP line can be accessed by using a prefix digit before the call is made.
