NEWS Netscape has squeezed into the black during its most recent quarter. The software company reported a $88,000 profit for the three months ended 31 July, compared with a loss of $44.7m for the equivalent period last year. Revenues for the latest quarter were $150.2m, up 18 per cent compared with figures for the preceding quarter. Jim Barksdale, Netscape CEO, said: "Overall, we are pleased with the results we posted for the quarter. We're seeing strong momentum in both the enterprise software and Netcenter businesses." In the face of strong competition from Microsoft - which has always given away its browser software, a policy Netscape only adopted recently - the company has recast itself as a provider of enterprise software as well as the browser technology it is still well-known for. Peter Currie, Netscape chief administrative officer, called the results "excellent". The company's enterprise software business accounted for $111.6m of total revenue for the quarter, as companies such as Ford purchased Netscape Directory Server as the base for an extranet system.
