NEWS The farming community of Europe could be the next big vertical market for satellite services if IT services company, Logica is to be believed. Logica and the EC's Centre for Earth Observation (CEO) have released a report highlighting the benefits of using satellite data to analyse farming methods. The IT services company reckons the high-tech approach allows farmers to better plan how land is used, and work out, for example, methods of irrigation and crop yield predictions. Data from the CEO is already used in the running of the Common Agricultural Policy. However, companies such as Logica are counting on the EC needing analysis of satellite data going back several years, if the service is going to turn out to be a viable moneymaker for them.
