In brief: Oracle and SGI launch interactive TV into Europe

NEWS Oracle and Silicon Graphics (SGI) will launch a joint product on Friday designed to deliver interactive TV to cable and satellite subscribers. Oracle developed the software and SGI will provide the hardware for the system. The companies say the service will vary slightly from country to country, but basic functions include video-on-demand, email through the TV and betting via the remote control. The service will be rolled-out in Europe and Asia in the first half of next year - a move which has prompted speculation that government subsidy, newer networks and increased competition make Europe an attractive market. US consumers are unlikely to see the technology until late 1999.
