NEWS The London Internet Exchange (Linx) and the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) have both strongly refuted widespread reports in the UK national press that the police are in discussions with ISPs in order to obtain access to private email. They have also denied similar reports that ISPs will allow police to check which Web sites people are looking at. Linx chairman, Keith Mitchell, told Silicon News on behalf of the top 50 UK ISPs that they are "always looking after their interests". Referring to the way the story has been reported, Mitchell said: "In the absence of knowing what's going on, people have imagined their worst fears". He added that future European laws are being worked on to protect the privacy of the individual. John Willmott, vice president at Input, explained that it would be likely for some security forces to do this "since they have always got the access that they have needed". He added: "Specialist access will always occur"
