In brief: Olivetti speeds introduction of Italian telephony

By Lisa Burroughes, 11 September 1998 13:30

NEWS Olivetti is today launching a discounted fixed-line telephony service for Italian households two years earlier than expected. The Olivetti-Mannesmann joint venture Infostrada claims it will offer up to 50 per cent savings on long distance calls. However, Infostrada is unable to offer local call services except to mobile phones, because Italian regulations prohibit new operators from connecting numbers with the same area code as that of the caller. The service already has 10,000 subscribers from its summer trials and hopes to attract 200,000 by the end of the year.
