NEWS Corporates, cable companies, Internet service providers (ISPs) and telecoms firms in London are to get access to 2.4Gbps data services through the UK's latest telco, IDN, launched today. IDN - which is the second UK telecoms company to launch in under a month - plans to offer access to its high-speed network for Internet, ecommerce and bulk data transfer applications. Ex-Cable & Wireless chief, Lord Young of Graffham, is personally backing the project and has taken the post of non-executive chairman at the company. Lord Young said, "The UK has more than £10bn invested in fibre-optic cabling, yet not all businesses are in locations where they can connect to the networks. IDN will offer those connections at speeds from 2Mbps to 2.4Gbps." IDN plans to offer links through systems integrators, ISPs, telcos, cable companies and private and public network consortiums. Ovum consultant, Parantha Narendran, believes the venture will be a success. "Anyone that comes in and offers cheap broadband capacity at the moment will do well," he said. Lord Young said IDN will be profitable by the end of 1999, and has long-term plans to replicate the business model in other cities around the world.
