NEWS France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom are teaming up to create a pan-European high-speed fibre optic cable network at a cost of $600m. The link will run between 16 countries and is intended to support the increasing volume of Internet data traffic carried over phone lines. The system should be complete by 2000. The partnership signals the solidarity between the companies as they prepare to swap a 2 per cent share holding. They plan to corner 10 per cent of the European phone market by 2003, excluding their domestic share.
