In brief: Nortel closes UK divisions

By Polly Raymond, 21 September 1998 18:06

NEWS Nortel announced the loss of 586 jobs today with the closure of its two of its UK operations at Paignton, Devon, and Maidenhead, Berkshire. The telecoms equipment manufacturer said the closures are required as part of its refocus towards new wireless product markets. The closure will be completed by the end of June 1999. Despite the cuts, Nortel claims it will continue to retain a presence in Paignton, where 1,400 jobs will remain. Nortel said the closure is part of last week's larger announcement concerning the cutting of 3,500 jobs worldwide. The cuts represent reduction of 4 per cent of Nortel's global workforce and is part of a "resizing", according to the company.
