Cisco dips toes in European waters

By Dominic Maher, 12 October 1998 00:20

NEWS Cisco is to invest £7m in a research facility in the UK, creating 60 jobs. The decision marks the first real commitment to Europe for a company which has long been criticised for refusing to open manufacturing or R&D facilities here. Arch rivals 3Com, Bay Networks and Cabletron all own factories in the Republic of Ireland. Clive Longbottom, strategy analyst at CSL Consulting, sees this is a late move for the networking company, but one "it has to make". Cisco has not officially commented on where the new facility will be sited, but Longbottom contradicted some reports, by saying that Cambridgeshire in the UK is more likely than location Edinburgh, Scotland. On the whole, Longbottom said the move is a positive one that will see the company invest millions of pounds in European expertise.
