NEWS Intel is to buy Shiva for $6 per share, valuing the remote access company at more than $180m. Under the terms of the deal, Shiva will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel, joining Intel's Network Products Division. Commenting on the agreement, Mark Christensen, vice president and manager of Intel's Network Products Division, stressed the importance of networking to the future of computing, and said Shiva's expertise with remote access and VPN (virtual private network) products attracted the world's largest chip-maker. He also said Shiva's focus on the small and medium-sized enterprise market was important to Intel. Shiva CEO, James Zucco, said the deal would be in the interests of the company's shareholders. They will have to approve the acquisition, as will US regulatory authorities. In recent weeks, industry pundits have also linked Intel with networking giant, 3Com.
