NEWS Action 2000 chief executive and ex-Oftel director general, Don Cruickshank, has been contracted by United News and Media to help it win a third generation mobile telecoms licence. While the move raises questions about a possible conflict of interests, Cruickshank insists he has gone through the proper formalities of obtaining permission from the Cabinet Office and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). A DTI spokeswoman said: "Mr Cruickshank has waited seven months before taking employment from a private sector organisation, as he is obliged to do. He has clearly done more than he needed in asking permission from us." However, wireless operator, Vodafone, reacted strongly to the news. Chief executive, Chris Gent, issued a statement, saying: "Given my respect for United News and Media, I am somewhat surprised at the appointment being offered to a man who has detailed knowledge of its competitors, gained from a position of advantage." However, a spokesman for Cellnet said it is entirely a matter for Cruickshank and his new employers, adding that it will wait until a bidding process has been established before committing itself to applying for a third generation licence.
