NEWS Sussex police force has signed up RAM Mobile Data, APD Communications and Petards Datax to provide its patrol officers with mobile wireless connections to the Police National Computer (PNC). The service will run on RAM's Interim Mobile Data Network using software from APD Communications. Initially, Petards Datax data terminals will be fitted to 100 of the force's patrol cars, giving officers secure email services and instant access to records held on the PNC. Tony Lake, assistant chief constable at Sussex Police, said: "We are continually striving to improve our policing efficiency to combat crime. The introduction of mobile data has demonstrated how officer effectiveness can be increased by providing timely information." The move comes after a six month national trial of the service, where police forces reported higher arrest rates, faster database checks, and an 80 per cent approval rate among officers using the system, according to RAM. RAM believes the system will also drastically shorten training times. The company hopes to replace the standard five day PNC course with a two-hour session on the mobile system. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
