IT giants refuse to exhibit at Comdex

NEWS Intel has decided for the first time in nine years not to hire a booth at the Comdex Fall trade show in Las Vegas. Other companies to pull out of the 1998 show include IBM and Netscape Communications, according to reports in the Wall Street Journal. The decisions follow complaints from exhibitors about price increases for those exhibiting at the show. Intel's director of corporate events, Robert Singer, said he could not justify the costs. Intel still plans to spend $1m on a 3,000 square foot meeting and promotion space, cutting the costs of last years show almost in half. Comdex 98 suffered another blow when Michael Dell, CEO of Dell, pulled out of his keynote speech at the last minute. Comdex's general manager, William Sell, admitted Dell had probably quit because they had increased the original number of speakers from five to nine - including a speech from Compaq's CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer. A Dell spokesman insisted that the withdrawal had nothing to do with Pfeiffer's presence. The Comdex Fall trade show takes place in Las Vegas from 16 - 20 November.
