Alcatel buys anti-fraud vendor

NEWS With an eye on offering telcos improved customer care and billing solutions, Alcatel today bought the fraud management business of privately-owned Applied IT. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Applied IT is known for its fraud management system (FMS), which uses neural network software on PSTN, cable, cellular, VPN (virtual private network), reseller and satellite networks. An Alcatel spokesman told Silicon.com: "Operators can lose 2 to 3 per cent of their revenues to fraud, and this deal will complement our existing worldwide distribution agreement for KSS's TelPrice system also aimed at reducing this crime." Applied IT's fraud management system will be renamed Alma FMS, and the company's FMS team will join Alcatel's telecom software solutions unit.
