NEWS Europe's biggest telcos saw a flurry of corporate reshuffling last week. Lars Berg, chief executive of Swedish telco Telia, quit the company late last week to join German manufacturing company, Mannesmann. Berg took over the top position at Telia five years ago after 24 years at Ericcson. He will head up Mannesmann's telecoms arm - Germany's top mobile phone company. In a statement Berg said the German firm had made him an offer he could not refuse and his departure was his decision, and had nothing to do with Telia. Telecom Italia has appointed Franco Bernabe as its new CEO. Bernabe previously headed up oil company Eni SpA, which he overhauled and brought back into profit during his six years in charge. The telco's shares rose 3 per cent on the news. Meanwhile, BT non-executive chairman, Iain Vallance has been playing down rumours of a move to the Royal Bank of Scotland. UK newspapers speculated that Vallance had been offered the position of chairman at the bank but according to the Daily Telegraph, Vallance has rubbished the claims.
