Vodafone buys Airtouch in $62bn deal

NEWS Vodafone and US cellular operator AirTouch Communications announced late last Friday that they are to merge in a deal worth $62bn. On Friday, the other telco in the race for AirTouch - US regional operator Bell Atlantic - bowed out of the contest. That paved the way for Vodafone which has courted the San Francisco-based mobile operator for about 18 months. The focus has now turned to the price Vodafone is paying and what the combined company - to be known as Vodafone AirTouch Plc - will mean to users. It will be one of Europe's largest companies - greater in market capitalisation than BT - with the ability to offer seamless international mobile services.
