Gateway jumps on free ISP bandwagon

NEWS Gateway launched a free UK Internet service provider (ISP) service this week, making it the first direct computer seller to get in on the free access act. The service - called Gateway.net - will come bundled with every new PC shipped by Gateway in the UK. Initially the service will only be available to new PC owners, but Michael Hughes, product manager at Gateway, confirmed the company will be rolling out the service to existing customers within a few months. Hughes explained Gateway's reasons for getting into the free ISP business: "The company wants to build an online community with customers so we can maintain longer term relationships." Gateway has been running a free ISP service in the US, and brought forward the European launch to compete with the launch of other free UK ISPs such as Dixon's Freeserve, Tesco and BT. Hughes admits Gateway's move could spark a number of similar schemes from competitors. "I would be surprised if it didn't take off," he said. The company now plans to roll out the service to other European regions.
