C&W launches global IP network

NEWS Cable & Wireless (C&W) yesterday launched its first worldwide Internet Protocol (IP) Virtual Private Network service (VPN). The service - available in over 60 countries - marks an attempt by C&W to provide a global infrastructure for building IP based WANs (wide area networks). Ian Taylor, product manager at C&W, said: "IP in the global space has always been related to the Internet. But IP offers a great deal for companies doing commerce - it has a huge potential but is lower in cost." He claimed the launch of the service proved that IP can offer the reliability and security that has, in the past, deterred companies from developing with the technology. "Companies have always wanted a greater presence on the Internet for selling products - it generates growth at a lower cost - but when you rely on a 'just in time' system you have to ensure the traffic gets through and is reliable," he said. The cable company will offer a premium intranet service for large corporates needing guaranteed bandwidth with low latency and a second service aimed at companies needing to access the network from multiple gobal sites.
