X-Stream offers free Net access in birthday bonanza

NEWS UK Internet service provider (ISP) X-Stream is giving its customers an evening of completely free Internet access. X-Stream already provides a subscription free service but unlike most free ISPs - including Freeserve, VirginNet and Tescos - it funds its service through advertising rather than telephone revenue. However, to celebrate its first birthday on 8 March its customers will be able to dial an 0800 number between 6:00pm and midnight to access the Internet for free rather than pay the local call charge. Paul Myers, managing director of X-Stream, said the offer is unlikely to become a frequent feature of the service. "It's a very expensive promotion for us as we have to pay the telco for all the calls that are made. But it highlights the fact that our revenue comes from advertising - I don't think any of the other free ISPs will be able to anything like this," he said.
