NEWS Direct marketing company, Brann has installed a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) based on Gigabit Ethernet running over fibre. The Bristol MAN uses Foundry Networks Biglrona 4000 switching routers, and was set up by systems integrator, MiTech. The project involved connecting two facilities, one of which is a call centre relying on real-time on-screen customer information. A 1.5kn 'dim' fibre pipe from Telewest runs between the two sites. Eric Thickett, MiTech MD, said ATM was not considered for the MAN because it is too expensive and too complex to implement in the timeframe Brann gave. Brann IT director, Ian Johnson called the deployment of Gigabit Ethernet "a truly mission critical decision", stressing it isn't being used in a "backroom installation". Prior to opting for Foundry Networks Gigabit Ethernet solution, Brann was running a 10/100 network across an FDDI (Fibre Distributed Data Interface) token passing network. Brann's customers include Microsoft, Sainsbury's and Sony.
