NEWS MSF, the UK trade union for skilled and professional people, is to offer free Web access to its 420,000 members. The union is finalising a deal with BT, whereby the UK telco will set up a dedicated local-rate telephone line for members' Internet accounts. A spokesman for MSF said: "This is not a financial arrangement. I assume BT gains because members still have to pay for their local calls." MSF is setting up the service to create closer ties with its members, which include workers in the IT industry. "We found in a recent survey that 80 per cent of our members use computers at work or at home, which is staggeringly higher than the national average," the spokesman continued. "We are totally committed to the Internet and we want to bring the best of it to our members," he added. MSF, formerly the Manufacturing, Science and Finance Union, will launch the service in May, along with an upgraded Web site at http://www.msf.org.uk . Union members will be given a free CD ROM of Web browsing software nearer the time.
