NEWS Cable & Wireless (C&W) has announced a major contract win with Compaq, just weeks after promoting enhancements to its IP (Internet Protocol) global network. The three-year deal will see C&W consolidate the network requirements of Compaq and its two subsidiaries, Digital and Tandem. The value of the deal has not been disclosed. Compaq will start by using the telco's ATM-based network between eight key sites in the UK, Germany, the US, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. The long-term goal is to extend the service to around 70,000 Compaq employees at over 100 locations around the world. C&W has also said ECRC, a Munich-based ISP (Internet service provider) it recently bought, will host the Web servers for the European arm of AltaVista, the search engine which Compaq inherited when it bought Digital.
